Weekend Box Office – Gatsby Pretty Good

Leonardo DiCaprio proved once again that he is unsinkable in a period piece as his latest, ‘The Great Gatsby’, surprised everyone by raking in $51.1 million over Mother’s Day weekend, according to studio estimates.  Despite very mixed reviews, Baz Luhrman’s lyrical adaptation came close to stealing away the #1 spot from Marvel.  Not bad for a film that was set to launch Christmas ’12 and was pushed back to summer for various reasons.  With filmgoers rating the film a soft ‘B’ rating via CinemaScore, time will tell how word of mouth holds. Marvel’s Tony Stark sequel continued its global domination as Iron Man 3 dipped 58% to $72m for a $284m total, still heading for a $400m+ final total.  Overseas, the film is still stomping everything in its path and should eventually hit $1 Billion worldwide.  Read our review here.

#3 continued to be ruled by Pain and Gain with $5m for a $41m total.  It might eek its way to $50m, making it a soft hit.  Tyler Perry, on the other hand, had his first full-on bomb with Peeples and its piddly $4.8m OPENING weekend.  The film will struggle to match its miniscule $15m budget.  Rounding out the top 5 is 42 with $4.6m for an $84m total.

This week will be interesting as Gatsby and Iron Man 3 have to go head-to-head with Star Trek Into Darkness, which is destined to steal much of the business away from both films.
