Too Much TV, Building Marvel, Gender Swapping, and Unsung Franchises | The Best of HO 2018: Vol 2

As we take the week off, here are four of our most popular topics from earlier this year (Too Much TV, Marvel, Gender Swapping, and Unsung Franchises), as well as quick recap of Peppermint, Searching, Ozark Season 2 and Jack Ryan.

First up, from Episode 308: 40 years ago, television options were vastly different. Three channels, or maybe thirteen depending on where you great up, and not much else. If the President had a speech, your TV night was shot. As time rolled on, our entertainment options continued to gain traction, each decade taking another turn into more content. Once Netflix introduced streaming as a primary option, our choices exploded. By the time 2018 is over, there will have been around 500 scripted television shows on the air. Between network TV, cable, premium, and now streaming, have we finally arrived at the place where we simply have TOO MUCH television?

Next, we head to Episode 310: We discuss all of the films BEFORE Infinity War. We begin with Iron Man, and how Marvel gambled on a risky talent by the name of Robert Downey, Jr. While he is beloved worldwide for his portrayal of Tony Stark, as well as many other projects, he was very much an actor studios were leery of. By staking the entirety of their future on him, they hedged what turned out to be one of the greatest bets in cinematic history. From here we move on to discuss everything else Marvel has attempted to do in the past 10 years.

Next, we head to Episode 312: The ladies take over the HO as Amanda leads Courtney and Angela on a discussion of spoilers in movie trailers and gender swapping in today’s remakes. Be sure to listen to the full episode where they also discuss surviving in a dystopian universe.

Finally, we come to Episode 313: Have you ever been so excited for a film, you can just about taste the franchise potential? Maybe you left the theater giddier than you expected, or heard word on the internet that there would definitely be more of the world you fell in love with…only to never have it materialize? Shawn Fuller from Horribly Awkward joins us to discuss those films that seemed destined for sequels or continuations of some sort, only to fail to live up to expectations in some matter, and therefore a franchise was dead before it ever had a chance to live.
