On being at the forefront of the Direct-to-DVD explosion with Tremors 2

‘So sometime later…we get this call from this new division at Universal, the video division. And they gives us this backhanded compliment. ‘We have to have Tremors 2…we could sell an empty box with Tremors 2 on it!’ I go, well I’m not sure that’s a compliment, but, so I sat down with our then agent now partner Nancy Roberts and Brent Maddock and we said ‘Well, gee, do we have an idea for Tremors 2? I don’t know’. And I had always wanted to do little monsters, because I come out of a million B-movies…and I thought could we get away with this? Could we get away with baby monsters?’

On working on the first Tremors

‘It was an absolutely delightful experience from top to bottom. From the crew to the cast to the thrill of doing it and being out there every day in the absolutely crazy conditions. From snow to 110 degree heat to dust storms. It was wacky.’

On where is the best writing now: Film or TV

‘As a group? Definitely TV. As a mass entertainment? Definitely television…except for the independents. Except for Wes Anderson. Chris Nolan. People with enough power to tell the studio ‘I’m going to make a movie about dreams and there’s nothing you can do about it’. Except for those powerful independents and powerful directors like Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, who can just say ‘I’m gonna do this, I don’t care what you say’. Except for those people, everything else is driven by marketing, entirely by marketing. And you get, at the most extreme, Battleship the movie.’
