Weekend Box Office – Earth Disappears

Well, Fast & Furious 6 continued to zip past everyone else, even as it dropped 64% to $34.5 million for $170m total so far.  By next week, Diesel and his crew should easily pass the $215m of Fast Five for the biggest film yet in the long running franchise.  Worldwide, it’s already past $400m and still has a ways to go.  People love bald drag racers.  It’s a fact.

Opening in 2nd, and taking everyone by surprise, Now You See Me opened to $28m, about $10m more than almost everyone predicted.  With a big Will Smith movie opening, not many thought a fun little flick about street magicians starring that guy that looks like Michael Cera would do much more than take up space at local theaters.  It did big numbers and with summer here and good word-of-mouth, this could be the summers surprise hit.  We’ll see how it plays out.

On the flip side, After Earth suffered a crash landing.  The $130m M. Night Shyamalan film starring Will and Jaden Smith, opened to $27m.  That’s just not good for a summer sci-fi tentpole pic starring Big Willie.  Bad press, poor word-of-mouth and a director many are coming to despise all factored into the abysmal opening.  The film should peter out pretty quick and hopefully Will takes something next that doesn’t revolve around his entire family and focuses on, you know, the people that paid to see HIM.

Epic held up poorly at #4 with $16.4m for a $65m total. Star Trek Into Darkness made the exact same amount for a $181m total, headed to a little over $200m.  The film won’t match its domestic total of the last film, but worldwide it will prove much stronger.

And lastly, The Hangover 3, oh how far the Wolf Pack has fallen.  Part 3 dropped 61% to #6 with $15.9m for only an $88m total.  For perspective, Part 2 had $185m by the same point.  Word-of-mouth has been very negative on the film, and that WoM is showing at the box office.  That said, overseas the series is huge and they will recoup their money.
