Weekend Box Office – Yo Joe!

GI Joe

G.I. Joe Retaliation wiped out the competition with a #1 opening not just here, but worldwide.  With an estimated $41 million in North America ($51m since opening Thursday), which was strong but not fantastic, and $130m worldwide (which puts it opening bigger than Oz for the biggest thus far this year) – The Rock, Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum saved America AND the weekend Box Office.  Even better, the film earned an A- from www.CinemaScore.com, which is exceptional for an action sequel such as this.  You can hear our review on this week’s show, but have faith that if you haven’t seen it yet, the film may be dumb, but it is fun.  It looks very doubtful that G.I. Joe will beat the $150m the first film made here, but should easily topple the $330m worldwide gross of that same film with ease.

The Croods held strong at #2 with $26.5m for an $88.6m total.  And in 3rd is that ‘Uh-Oh, this guy I had an affair with might be crazy’ Tyler Perry flick Temptation with $22.3m…huge for Easter weekend.  Never underestimate the Perry.

In 4th, last week’s big action flick Olympus Has Fallen…fell to $14m for a $54.7m total.  Oz the Great and Powerful held strong at #5 with $11.6m for a $198m total and by the end of day Monday will have hit $200m equaling sequels.  Stephanie Meyer found out that without a vampire, she’s screwed as The HOst opened to a middling $11m.  If only the aliens had glistened in the sunlight…
