Weekend Box Office Mar 15-17

the call

Oz continued its Great & Powerful domination at the box office with $41.2 million, down only 48% from last weekend for a $144m total.  Based on its current trajectory, the Wizard of Oz prequel is on course to end up with about $230m total US and over $500m worldwide.  Not a bad number for a prequel to a 70+ year old film.

Shocking even Halle Berry herself, The Call opened to $17.1m this weekend for a #2 finish.  The film about a 911 operator trying to find a kidnapped girl, also starring Little Miss Sunshine Abigail Breslin, was expected to barely register at the box office.  Instead the film trumped mega-stars like Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell.  Go Halle, it’s your birthday…

Opening at a pathetic #3 with a wimpering $10.1m was The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.  The Steve Carrell – Jim Carrey (see above) flick about rival Vegas magicians SHOULD have brought in $20-30m easily on opening weekend.  Instead, this opened like an Andy Samberg flick.  That means poorly, btw.

Otherwise, not much to report.  Jack the Giant Slayer maimed at #4 with $6.3m for a $54m total and Identity Thief continues to steal cash at #5 with $4.4m for a $123m total.
