Star Trek Into Darkness took #1 at the weekend box office, as expected.  Unfortunately, its estimated $70 million opening was smaller than the previous film’s $79m opening in 2009.  As the film officially opened on Thursday, some of that number was offset and in total, Trek 2 took in $84m since its Thursday launch.  That’s still less tickets than the previous film, which took the studio by surprise as the previous film was such a well-liked property the real money was on this one blowing the doors off it.  The doors are firmly still attached.

On the plus side, audiences loved it, giving the film a coveted A rating from CinemaScore and also the international opening was 80% better than the last film and all told – Star Trek Into Darkness has already made over $160m worldwide. Time will tell how the film ultimately does, but it will be hard to match the original’s $257m total at this point.

A sequel that did kick its predecessor’s ass is Iron Man 3.  With another $35m for a $337m total US and over $1 billion worldwide, it is officially the biggest Iron Man film and second only to The Avenger’s for Marvel.  Slow clap, Mr. Downey.

The Great Gatsby held well, with $24m for a $90m total.  The film is getting good reviews from audiences so a $140m total could happen.  Pain & Gain is still around somehow, but way back with $3m for a $46m total.  And rounding out the top 5 – The Croods, with $2.7m for a $176m total.  Shame on you, parents.
