Weekend Box Office Aug 31 – Sep 2

Labor Day Weekend is typically one of the slowest at the Box Office, but one film managed to buck the trend as The Possession took the #1 spot with $17.7 million according to studio estimates.  The low-budget horror flick starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick as divorced parents of 2 young girls and 1 happens to get possessed by, you guessed it, a big ass jewelry box.  This is why we recommend avoiding yard sales.  Cinemascore recorded a grade of ‘B’, which isn’t bad for a horror film.

Opening in 2nd  was Lawless, the Shia LaBeouf / Tom Hardy prohibition piece with $9.6m for the weekend and $11.8m since opening Wed.  This is code for a bad opening, which is generally why a film is dumped on this frame to begin with. Even with a Cinemascore of B+, don’t expect a Lawless 2 anytime soon. The Oogieloves opened with an AWFUL $448K for a $207 theater average.  That means even parents that don’t want to deal with their kids said nooooooooooooooooo.

For holdovers, Expendables 2 held strong at $8.8m for a $66m total.  Look for a $85-90m final.  The Bourne Legacy pulled in $7.2m for a $96m total.  The film should pass $100m sometime this week.  Not bad, but much less than the studio expected.  Rounding out the Top 5 was Paranorman with $6.5m for a $38m total.  The film is holding fairly well and should manage $55m or so.

One last note – This weekend, The Dark Knight Rises passed it’s last major milestone with $1 BILLION worldwide.  The trilogy has concluded as a phenomenon and we can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
