Weekend Box Office Aug 10-12

Jeremy Renner’s assuming the lead in The Bourne Legacy from franchise stablemate Matt Damon, seems to have started off strong…with an estimated $38.1 million   opening this weekend.  Industry experts predicted a much higher opening, but this film is a reboot and a spin-off, it has more in common with Casino Royale than it does a Bourne sequel.  We’ll have our review on this week’s show so tune in for that.

Will Farrell and Zack Galifianakis had their Campaign and started strong with $26.5m  for the weekend…a pretty strong start for an R-rated political comedy.  Those don’t exactly scream BOX OFFICE SMASH! these days, so this is a good start.  Plus, almost every R-rated comedy this summer has failed to gain any traction with movie goers.  Seems the pairing of these 2 baffoons did some good after all.

The Dark Knight Rises held strong in 3rd with another $18.9m  for a total of $389.5m.  Good chance there will be another Batman movie sometime in the near future.  Total Recall, on the other hand, fell  68%% to $8m for a weak $44m total.  Don’t expect another one of those…for at least 20 years.

HOpe Springs opened with $14.6m and has made $19m since Wednesday.  That’s not bad at all for the older skewering relationship dramedy starring Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep.  Most of those that see Meryl’s films do not feel the need to rush out on opening weekend, so word of mouth should carry this film.

We’ll see what happens next weekend when The Expendables 2 takes theaters hostage along with Sparkle.  Here more about these upcoming films as well as our review of Total Recall on this week’s HO here:
