Horror is the Gladiator of movie genres. No matter how many times you think it’s down, it always emerges from the ashes with another fresh take that revitalizes the genre. It’s also one of the most profitable of film genres as they typically have low budgets and yield high returns. And as Together demonstrates, what is more horrific than a relationship?
I kid, but only slightly. Every relationship of any real length will eventually fade into struggles as they find a way to evolve…together. Alison Brie and Dave Franco star as Millie and Tim, a couple in a rut who decide to relocate for Millie’s sweet new job while Tim tries to figure out how to make a living as a musician. There are layers to each of their characters, just as there are in life. Tim might seem to be a wandering nomad, but he has a dream that Millie has always supported, yet Franco showcases his obvious jealousy and frustration with Millie’s success and mothering is weighing on him. Likewise, Millie could easily come across as cold and demanding, but in Brie’s hands, we understand her growing pleas for stability and respect.
Writer and director Michael Shanks immediately immerses us in the plight of these two, their motives, and where their relationship is headed unless they find common ground. Does Tim even want to be here? Is Millie sick of carrying his weight? Ultimately, do these two even want to remain in a relationship? It’s all in the details.
A random hike drops the pair into a cave that should come with its own ominous soundtrack, and they’re forced to stay overnight and make all of the classic horror movie mistakes that lead to the changing of bodies in the most David Cronenberg manner possible. Yet, in a way, it does bring them together. The question instead becomes; how do they separate?
Brie and Franco both give standout performances, they ARE the movie. Both actors begin the film delivering their greatest hits – their typical character tics in any other film – before shifting gears and showcasing each of their best work yet. Comedy, drama, horror, both actors pack in a sizzle reel of talent on display. It is a beautiful enigma of a film to deconstruct a relationship in this way, and this is inspired casting. There is also gleeful supporting turn from Damon Herriman, but otherwise this is completely about Brie and Franco.
As director Michael Shanks dials up the body horror, the practical effects combine nicely with the physical contortions of Brie and Franco as this curse begins to mold their bodies together in the most uncomfortable yet visceral way possible. His script remains sharp and on task, immersing the audience even as the events become increasingly audacious. Shanks firmly places his stamp on horror with this film, and it shows he has a great future in the genre should he pursue it.
The less said about where the film is headed the better, but if you are searching for a horror flick taking a few chances with actors willing to put it all on the line, you’re going to love Together.
