The Best of Comic-Con 2014

IMAG0006

Now that the San Diego Comic-Con is over, it’s almost time for our Comic-Con wrap-up episode. That’s right, we’re bringing you allllllllllllll of our favorite bits from the Con in one episode! Can we cover every bit of news that hit? Not even close. But we can cover what we thought was the best of the best!

SO in honor of our upcoming episode, here are a few tidbits from the Con to peruse in the meantime. Trailers, quick news hits, and just our $.02. Yes, we talk Superman, Avengers, etc., but also the pilots and panels.

Enjoy, and maybe we’ll see you there next year!

24: Live Another Day Panel

Of course we went to the 24: Live Another Day panel! You noticed we did an entire podcast for the series right? What big tidbits did we get out of that one? Mostly that Kiefer Sutherland had a great time filming the series and he and series producer Jon Cassar (who also served as moderator) have a great banter that served this audience well. While we did NOT get any announcement of another series, Cassar left the door wide open (seriously, a cougar could walk through that open door any time) and even stated that a movie may still be in the cards.

Something concrete: The DVD and Blu-Ray set for Live Another Day will be released on September 30th, 2014.

Gotham Pilot

For the world premiere of the Gotham pilot, Warner Brothers brought Arrow himself (Stephen Amell) to introduce it with Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) in tow. The pilot is well directed and showcases Jim Gordon as a man who will not be bought. Once he realises his own partner is on the take, not to mention local mobster Falcone is on to him, Gordon is forced to manipulate both sides of the law to bring order to Gotham City. This is a dark, moody pilot and did enough to keep us invested in its future.

This is NOT overly comic-booky if that is something that concerns you. Bright lights, supervillains, nor superpowers are present in any fashion. You do get a touch of Catwoman, the beginnings of the Penguin, as well as a new mobster presented as the horribly named Fish Mooney (who is suprisingly well-cast with Jada Pinkett Smith). Gotham feels more along the lines of a dark, serialized drama with a rich history of characters to pull from than Arrow or Smallville. Along the lines of Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy in terms of look and feel, just lacking the guy running rampant in a rubber batsuit through the wee hours of the night.

Keep an eye out for Gotham this fall on FOX.

Resurrection Panel

Some little nuggets from the panel on Season 2 (possible spoilers for Season 1)

  • Michelle Fairley (Game of Throne, 24 LAD) will join the series as Henry’s mother, an antagonistic character described as ‘The Mother-In-Law From Hell’
  • Rachel’s pregancy is a huge portion of where the story is headed for Season 2
  • Fred will have to deal with the consequences of his actions from last year’s finale
  • The show creators ended any dispute, going on record to say they DO know how the series will end

Sons of Anarchy Panel

All of the living Sons except for Mr. Charlie Hunnam were in attendance this year (though Jax did share a genius video explaining his ass…I mean absence), and what a panel it was. Creator Kurt Sutter was moved to almost tears upon hearing how beloved the audience and cast feel about the work he has shared in a rare, very touching moment on stage. Sutter and Co. also made sure we were aware that this year all bets are off and no one is safe from Mr. Mayhem.

‘Hearts will be broken this year’…get ready for a hell of a ride for the final season!

Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

IMAG0073

Yes, the footage was sweet. No, the WB will never release it. That, in itself, should be a crime. Sincerely. Batman (in full Dark Knight Returns gear) uncovering the Bat Signal just in time to catch Superman flying by with his beaming red eyes…it…was…fantastic! WHY they do not release this in all of its glory is for the WB to decide, but it would definitely shut up all of the naysayers in about a Metropolis Minute. Also, having director present our three heroes on stage (Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot) and not let them say a single word was a stroke of genius.

The costumes presented you have all seen by now, and they looked scrumptious. Does Gal Gadot work as Wonder Woman? She looked fine from where I was sitting. Her costume is a little too Xena for my liking, but it is far from bad and honestly think Wonder Woman was due for an update for the silver screen. It actually looks great on Gadot, even though she is still way too skinny. Seriously, eat a chicken breast.
